Puppies Who Grunt

Megan and I are puppy sitting a French bulldog. Her name is Leeloo.

She’s got a bad back and a terrible snarl that comes out when she breathes. It’s like having a piglet in the house.

Needless to say, I was woken up this morning from a NyQuil induced stupor (the winter cold has come back with a vengeance) to Leeloo’s attempts at face licking.

Even if you’re sick and miserable, there’s no better way to wake up.

Actually, that’s a lie. There are way better ways to wake up. But puppy company ranks in the top three best ways to wake up.

Since I don’t have to be at work today, it’s just Leeloo and I, some knitting, and several tea pots of honey and hot water. Oh, and a pot of turkey bone soup simmering on the stove. If I get ambitious, I might go downtown to hunt down the winter boots my purple-freezing toes are begging me to buy.

When people said it was cold in Korea, they meant it. But the most ruthless part of this cold is the dry air. Every breath feels like breathing tiny bits of glass. And it’s only going to get colder.

Thankfully, I’m headed to Busan this weekend for the new year. Not that it’ll be any warmer down there, but there’s an ocean so I’m holding high hopes that the air won’t be as dry. Either way it’ll be good just to see the ocean.

Flash update: Leeloo is now grunting along to Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend.”

And that’s all for today.
